This Costume was inspired by The Moulin Rouge and Paris. I looked at The Moulin Rouge both historically and the Baz Luhrmann film interpretation. I wanted the Windmill to be the main feature on the costume, as it's so iconic to The Moulin Rouge. I also included an appliqued Eiffel Tower and Elephant as they too as very famous. I really embellished the Windmill blades, by using a wire frame and trapping of embroidery and illustration in-between. I using reverse applique, applique, batik wax, quilting and dissolvable fabric.
I am a Costume Designer and Embroiderer and I'm currently between both Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire and Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. This blog is a showcase of my work, showing the different elements of my processes from sketchbook, through to design and final constructed costume. My main aim in creating a costume is the portrayal of character. I am particularly passionate about taking characters from historical productions such as the works of Shakespeare and putting a completely new twist on the character. Due to my embroidery background, I also enjoy working with contemporary embroidery to embellish my costumes.
"Costume can say things that words cannot, and can create effects that a speaker would never equal." -David Mayer
